How to calculate your gravel project
Gravel is normally ordered by the ton even though projects are measured by area and depth. This calculator converts your dimensions into both volume and an approximate delivery weight.

- Measure the longest length and width of the area.
- Choose a finished gravel depth; many paths use 2–3 inches, while bases may be deeper.
- Use the waste allowance for compaction, uneven grade, and spillage.
Formula
The calculation
Area × depth = volume. Cubic feet are divided by 27 for cubic yards, then multiplied by the selected gravel density to estimate tons.
Worked example
A 20 × 10 ft area at 3 inches deep with 10% extra requires about 2.04 cubic yards. At 1.4 tons per cubic yard, that is roughly 2.85 tons.
The result is a planning estimate. Round purchasing quantities up to available package sizes and confirm the exact product specifications.

Why the waste factor matters
A waste or extra-material percentage allows for real-world variation: irregular edges, cuts, compaction, settling, spillage, and measurement error. Ten percent is a useful starting point, not a universal rule. Increase or reduce it according to the material, layout, and supplier guidance.
