Mulch job estimator

Estimate a mulch job from bed area to customer price.

A useful mulch estimate goes beyond cubic yards. Measure the beds, choose an installed depth, compare bulk and bagged material, then account for labor, delivery, equipment, and job conditions.

01

Measure irregular beds

Outline separate garden-bed sections from satellite imagery and combine their square footage without drawing across buildings or turf.

02

Compare buying options

See bulk yards and whole bag counts together, then replace the starting prices with quotes from your local supplier.

03

Carry cost into the estimate

Send the material amount into an editable customer estimate and add labor, delivery, markup, and terms.

Connected workflow

A repeatable mulch estimating method

  1. 01

    Measure the bed area

Use known dimensions or outline each visible bed section on the satellite map.

  2. 02

    Set finished depth

Choose the installed depth and account for existing mulch, settling, uneven grade, and the needs of the planting bed.

  3. 03

    Check supplier pricing

Compare cubic-yard delivery pricing with bag coverage, minimums, tax, and delivery charges.

  4. 04

    Price the complete job

Add spreading labor, preparation, edging, cleanup, disposal, travel, equipment, overhead, and profit as appropriate.

What to know

What can change a mulch estimate?

Satellite area and calculator output are planning estimates. Tree cover, overhangs, bed borders, slopes, and point placement can change the area, while actual bag coverage and bulk density vary by product.

Job price also depends on access. Carry distance, stairs, wheelbarrow routes, bed preparation, weed removal, edging, and cleanup can affect labor even when two properties require the same material quantity.

Common questions

Questions contractors ask

How many cubic yards of mulch do I need?

Multiply bed area by depth to get cubic feet, divide by 27 for cubic yards, and include a reasonable allowance for uneven beds and settling.

Can the calculator compare bulk mulch and bags?

Yes. YardMeasure shows bulk volume and whole bag count together and lets you enter local prices for comparison.

Can I turn the calculation into an estimate?

Yes. Send the calculated material cost into the estimate builder, then add labor, other costs, markup, tax, deposit, and terms.
