How to calculate your grass seed project
Grass seed labels give an application rate, usually in pounds per 1,000 square feet. Enter the rate for the exact seed and whether the job is new seeding or overseeding; the calculator converts the measured lawn into total weight and whole bags.

- Measure only the soil or turf area that will receive seed.
- Read the new-lawn or overseeding rate on the product label and enter that rate.
- Enter the bag weight, price, and an extra allowance for spreader overlap or touch-up work.
Formula
The calculation
Lawn area with the selected extra allowance is multiplied by the label rate per 1,000 square feet (or per 100 square meters). Required weight is divided by bag weight and rounded up to whole bags.
Worked example
A 6,000 ft² lawn seeded at 5 lb per 1,000 ft² with 10% extra needs 33 lb of seed. With 25 lb bags, that rounds up to 2 bags.
The result is a planning estimate. Round purchasing quantities up to available package sizes and confirm the exact product specifications.
Material assumptions
- Application rate must come from the label for the exact seed blend and project type.
- Bag count is rounded up and remaining seed may be useful for later repairs.
- The estimate excludes fertilizer, mulch, soil preparation, labor, and equipment.

Why the waste factor matters
A waste or extra-material percentage allows for real-world variation: irregular edges, cuts, compaction, settling, spillage, and measurement error. Ten percent is a useful starting point, not a universal rule. Increase or reduce it according to the material, layout, and supplier guidance.
