How to calculate your sod project
Sod is sold by covered area, but suppliers may package it as rolls, slabs, or pallets. This calculator keeps the coverage math visible and lets you replace the starting package sizes with the exact numbers from your supplier.

- Measure the lawn area or send a satellite measurement into the calculator.
- Enter the square footage covered by one roll or piece and the supplier's pieces-per-pallet count.
- Add extra sod for trimming, damaged pieces, curved edges, and layout changes.
Formula
The calculation
Measured lawn area is increased by the selected waste percentage. Order area is divided by the coverage of one roll or piece, then pieces are divided by the supplier's pallet quantity. Purchasing quantities are rounded up.
Worked example
A 2,000 ft² lawn with 8% extra needs 2,160 ft² of sod. If each piece covers 10 ft² and a pallet holds 50 pieces, plan for 216 pieces or 5 pallets.
The result is a planning estimate. Round purchasing quantities up to available package sizes and confirm the exact product specifications.

- The calculator does not subtract hardscape, trees, or beds unless they are excluded from the measured area.

Why the waste factor matters
A waste or extra-material percentage allows for real-world variation: irregular edges, cuts, compaction, settling, spillage, and measurement error. Ten percent is a useful starting point, not a universal rule. Increase or reduce it according to the material, layout, and supplier guidance.

How much extra sod should I order?
Five to ten percent is common for a simple rectangular lawn. Curves, narrow strips, diagonal layouts, or uncertain measurements can require more.
How many square feet are on a pallet of sod?
There is no universal pallet size. Coverage varies by sod type, grower, piece size, and region, so enter the coverage and pieces per pallet listed by your supplier.
Should I round sod up to a full pallet?
Suppliers may sell full pallets, partial pallets, or individual pieces. The calculator shows full pallets for planning; confirm the available order increments before buying.
